VOLUNTEER FOR BLOOP!

WHY VOLUNTEER?

Bloop isn't to the point where we can offer paid positions. That said, there are a bunch of reasons to volunteer for Bloop:

  • You can get community service hours and contribute to a good cause!
  • You can get free hands-on training, and educate others!
  • You can alleviate boredom!
  • Who doesn't want to play with computers and games and tech?
  • You'll have an opportunity to socialize with other like-minded folks!

WHAT VOLUNTEER TASKS ARE AVAILABLE?

  • Greeter: On Walk-in Wednesday, we need someone to welcome visitors, get their information, explain the rules, and help them find their way to a tour in-progress or get Brendan to start one. Other people might visit too, so you could be asked to sign for a package or something like that.
  • Docent: Brendan loves giving tours, but to handle larger groups and school tours, we often need a second (or third!) guide.
  • Curation and Exhibit design: Brendan also loves to design exhibits, but help with the construction and building side of things is helpful. Also, if you have a good idea for an exhibit, let's make it happen!
  • Inventory: Help us with the stream of things coming through the museum! We need to triage, test, and inventory things, then decide what to do with them, and we have a system for a lot of this.
  • Equipment repairs: Bloop has many things. If you can recap a board, replace components, or work on CRTs, we have a place for you. Soon we'll plan workshops where people can buddy up on repairs.
  • Building maintenance: Our volunteers are doing things like networking, installing devices around the museum, plumbing and wiring, carpentry, landscaping, and other repairs.

WHEN CAN I VOLUNTEER?

The best times to meet other volunteers and work with a team are:

  • Walk-in Wednesdays, which are also the best time to be a greeter or learn to give tours.
  • Thursday evenings we have a small squad doing inventory, but sometimes we switch gears and move things around.
  • One weekend day, currently Sunday, when we do general busywork and manual labor.
If one of these doesn't work for you, we'll work hard to make sure someone can be here at whatever time you want to volunteer, so don't be shy about asking if you can come at a different time / on a different day.

GREAT - HOW DO I GET STARTED?

First, get a tour of the museum and let us know you want to volunteer. We'll show you areas that you could help us while we show you around. We coordinate on Discord, so please don't forget to leave contact information and add us while you're here!
